Canada's 150 Anniversary quilt

Victoria and I  found these fabrics that are available only in Canada in September of 2014. They were on sale so we bought enough for three quilts.

The collection is called Oh Canada, by Northcott Fabrics of Canada

In January of 2015 Victoria and I started designing a quilt. This is her quilt in progress.

The next year we saw that the fabrics were still being produced. It is now 2017 and the 150th Anniversary of Canada. I thought this would be a fun way to mark this event so we decided to make one for each family.

We mad three in 2017. One for Natalie. She cut the fabric for all three in Augut of 2017. We finished her's then but didn't quilt it so that she could take it home easily.

One for Irina that we gave for her in Dec 2017. Irina did most of the the sewing on it.

One for Scott that we gave to him in Dec of 2018. His is the same design as Irina's with red sashing instead of black. The only one with black sashing is Victoria's.

Afternoon Quilts

Deb Hardin and Katie Edwards have a quilt store where you can make quilts from a kit or buy them already made. It is called Afternoon Quilts.
I was able to make a sample top for them before they opened in Dec 2016. It went together really quick because everything is cut already and there are great instructions that make it even easier.
Check it out!

This is their product description

Small quilt kits –
Our small quilt kits each contain –
  1. Pre-cut strips or pieces that will create the quilt top.  These pieces are cut exactly to size and require no cutting.
  2. Batting – We use Hobbs 80/20 Cotton/Poly batting. The batting is cut slightly larger than your finished quilt top so you can easily baste your quilt.
  3.  Cuddle minky backing chosen to match perfectly with the quilt top. Your backing is cut slightly large so that you can easily baste it.
  4. Strips to use for the binding. You will need to sew them all together and then iron them into binding. We use three inch strips so that you have plenty of binding so that there is no problem binding around the thick cuddle minky back.
  5. Assembly instructions.
*Not included – Thread and pins for basting*
The finished size of our small quilts is 40×55 inches.
This is a great size for a lot of different uses. These quilts work well as –
  • a crib quilt
  • a floor time quilt
  • a toddler bed comforter
  • a quilt for small children
  • a small throw to keep your legs warm
  • a stadium blanket
  • a lap quilt for a wheelchair
  • and many other things!
These quilts have been designed to be able to be made in just an afternoon. If you are looking for a quick and easy project this is the perfect option. We have provided you with everything you need to sit down and make an entire quilt from start to finish in very little time.
Pre-made Small Quilts –
We do not currently have many pre-made small quilts listed. However, we do have some in stock. If you see a kit that you like, but would like it made for you, please contact us at info@afternoonquilts.com for more information.
Medium Quilt Kits-
Our medium quilt kits each contain –
  1. Pre-cut pieces that will create the quilt top.  These pieces are cut exactly to size and require no cutting.
  2. Batting – We use Hobbs 80/20 Cotton/Poly batting. The batting is cut slightly larger than your finished quilt top so you can easily baste your quilt.
  3.  Minky backing chosen to match perfectly with the quilt top. Your backing is cut slightly large so that you can easily baste it.
  4. Strips to use for the binding. You will need to sew them all together and then iron them into binding. We use three inch strips so that you have plenty of binding so that there is no problem binding around the thick minky back.
  5. Assembly instructions.
  6. Helpful hints for creating your quilt.
*Not included – Thread and pins for basting*
Our medium quilts are not all strip quilts. There is a variety of patterns available.  These are larger quilts and so they will take a little bit more time to assemble. There is some variation in the size that each quilt finishes as, but they are all approximately 58×65 inches. Each quilt listing has the exact finished measurements.
These quilts were designed with the following possibilities in mind:
  • a quilt for older children, teens and adults
  • a throw for on the couch
  • can be used on a twin bed (double check the measurements to make sure you like the fit!)
  • as a stadium blanket
  • a travel quilt
Pre-made Medium Quilts –
We do not currently have any pre-made medium quilts listed. However, we do have some in stock. If you see a kit that you like, but would like it made for you, please contact us at info@afternoonquilts.com for more information.

We are excited to share our products with each of you. We hope that no matter how busy your schedule is these quilts will make it so that you can create, even when you don’t have much extra time and energy to spend. Happy Quilting!

New Quilt by Victoria using the Box Trot pattern

This is Victoria's latest quilt. The quilt is from the
Box Trot pattern for her sister-in-law, Sarah.

She quilted it on Marg McCullough's long arm quilting machine.
